Sarasota, Florida is a very community oriented area. Dozens of clubs, organizations and charities are active year round in the county.

Many residents, especially the retired, are active in community organizations. Throughout the year, the Sarasota social scene revolves around these great organizations.

  • The Downtown Sarasota Farmers' Market has been a downtown mainstay for more than 28 years. The year-round, Saturday morning market is a potpourri of fresh produce, food, flowers and plants, arts and crafts and more. 7am – 1pm. Free admission. Downtown Sarasota Main and Lemon.
  • Shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, local honey, fresh-baked bread, flowers, and more at the Lakewood Ranch Farmers Market on Lakewood Main St. each Saturday through April. 8A - 1P. 941-461-7674

  • Free nature program led by Chuck Idelberger, biologist, at Blackburn Pt. Park, 800 Blackburn Pt. Rd. 34275, from 9:30am-11:30am. Explore the sea life near our beaches. Wading shoes suggested. 941-861-5000
  • The Sarasota County Health Department’s Health In Motion Mobile Medical Unit will travel to 15 sites in Sarasota County during March to offer free H1N1 vaccines along with their other services. These include diabetes education and screening, blood pressure tests, pregnancy testing, HIV and tuberculosis testing, adult immunizations and health education to those who lack medical insurance and do not have a healthcare provider. Assistance with finding a permanent health care provider is also available. No appointments are needed. Some services are free, including HIV rapid testing with results in 20 minutes. Other services are offered on a sliding-fee scale based on income. Licensed volunteer physicians from the Senior Friendship Center provide basic medical care when the mobile medical unit is at the Salvation Army in Sarasota. A registered nurse is available at all sites.

  • 18th Annual Meadows Community Association Celebration of Fine Arts 10am-4pm. Free Admission. 2004 Longmeadow Dr., Sarasota. Exhibit and sale of fine art by Meadows artists. A wide range of art forms will be on display and the artists are always happy to talk to you about their creations. Come and enjoy the show, talk to the artists, and as an added attraction enter your name to be eligible to win a free work of art donated by some of the artists. There is no admission fee and you don’t have to be present during the 10 draws for free art. 941-377-2300
